Discover Chania in Crete by Hire Car
Chania is the second largest city on the island of Crete, with a population of just over 60,000.
It is located in the northwest of the island and can be ideally chosen as a starting point to explore the western part of Crete with a hire car, where scenic attractions and secluded monasteries await the tourist in particular.
Sights in Chania
In Chania itself, the old Venetian harbour is worth a visit, never gaining importance as a trading port due to shallow waters, but pretty to look at with its picturesque 15th-century Venetian buildings and impressive 17th-century Janissary mosque. There are also tavernas and cafes there to tempt you to linger.
The Topanás district enchants visitors with winding alleyways dotted with Venetian and Turkish buildings. This is also where you will find most of the hotels in Chania. In the Kastelli district there is an excavation site where remains from the Minoan settlement period can be seen, but they are nowhere near as spectacular as the palace complexes of Knossos, Hagia Triada or Malia.
You can get a rich selection of fresh fish and fruit at the picturesque indoor market. The Archaeological Museum in Chania is located in the old monastery church of San Francesco. It contains various finds from Minoan and Hellenistic times.
Exploring the surroundings of Chania
As mentioned earlier, this city is a good starting point for exploring the western part of Crete in a hire car, where scenic attractions and secluded monasteries await the traveler in particular.
