Exploring Agios Nikolaos by Hire Car
For those who want to be welcomed by a mild climate and kissed by the warm Cretan sun, Agios Nikolaos is the place to be.
In the northeast of the popular holiday island hides behind this sonorous name a fantastically located pearl of relaxation.
With a charming port, an interesting museum, cozy tavernas and the beautiful beaches in the area, Agios Nikolaos on Crete has a lot to offer travelers. And with a hire car, the many worthwhile places in the surrounding area can be easily reached.
Sights in Agios Nikolaos
The city stroll could begin at the archaeological museum. It was founded in 1970 and offers a rich collection of ancient excavations. You can see there finds from the early Minoan period, made between 3000 and 2000 BC.
But more recent exhibits up to the sixth century BC are also on display. The entrance ticket costs two euros.
Next stop on your stroll could be the harbour, lined with two-storey Mediterranean-style houses. From there, it’s not far to the pedestrian zone, where numerous small shops with typical souvenirs vie for customers’ favour.
If you find yourself in town on a Wednesday, the colourful weekly market you’ll find near the hospital will entice you. Traders from the region offer all kinds of goods for everyday needs for sale.
If you’re in the mood for some sunbathing, hop in your hire car and head straight to Kalo Chorio beach. In less than half an hour you will be there. A spacious bay with a fine sandy beach and clear sea awaits you.
When you’re back in town in the evening after a fun day of swimming, the shores of Lake Voulismeni are a good address. The lake is in the middle of town and is lined with numerous bars and tavernas where you can end the day on a pleasant note.

Find a good restaurant
A lot of tourists at the same time ensure that there is no shortage of restaurants in Agios Nikolaos. We recommend Piato. This quaint taverna is a little off the beaten track on Amoudi Beach and offers gorgeous sea views. They serve genuine Cretan delicacies. The restaurant is open daily from 10:00 am until midnight. On weekends you can even feast until 1:00 am.
Find a good hotel
There are also plenty of good hotels in this charming place. We recommend the “Minos Palace”. It is quietly located on a small peninsula outside the town and spoils you with a gorgeous pool, spectacular views of the sea and comfortable, modern rooms.

Another picturesque place awaits you when you steer the hire car to Sitia. In just over an hour you will be there, amidst snow-white cottages that seem to have been built into the hillside. In the alleys you can stroll extensively and explore the small shops, and then enjoy a cool drink at the picturesque harbour.
And while you squint in the sun and watch the boats come in and out, you can take your time to consider where to go next in your hire car.
