Discover Würzburg by Hire Car
In the centre of the Nuremberg – Stuttgart – Frankfurt am Main triangle, only about an hour’s drive by hire car, lies the tranquil town of Würzburg on the banks of the River Main.
Founded in 704, the city can look back on a history of over 1,300 years. A history that, if you look at the townscape, has left its mark.
Sights in Würzburg
So towering high above the rooftops is the Marienburg Fortress, Würzburg’s landmark. Where the first fortification walls were built over 1,000 years ago, a huge complex of massive walls can be seen today.
At the centre is the Residenz, which was converted into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. It was from here that the prince-bishops ruled over Würzburg and the surrounding countryside until the 18th century.
Then they moved to the Würzburg Residence on the edge of the city centre, completed in 1780. As one of the most important baroque buildings in Europe, this is a centre of attraction for many of the city’s guests.
On the grounds, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the huge garden with its ornate flowerbeds and the splendidly furnished court church are among the biggest attractions.
Countless medieval and early modern chapels, churches and secular buildings adorn the city centre, with many small cafés and cosy restaurants awaiting holidaymakers in between.
Exploring the surroundings of Würzburg
