Kurort Wiesbaden
The healing properties of water were already appreciated by the Romans. They founded the settlement under the name “Aquae Mattiacorum”.
In the following years, the poet prince Goethe took a cure in Wiesbaden, Kaiser Wilhelm II chose the place as a summer resort and Richard Wagner was inspired here for his “Meistersinger”. The centre of Wiesbaden is the Wilhelmsstraße promenade.
At its northern end is the Kurbezirk. Dominated by Bowling Green, a green space with two cascading fountains. The magnificent Kurhaus was built in 1907 and houses the casino in the former wine hall.
The spa park was laid out in 1852 in the style of an English garden. The most productive and, at 67 degrees, warmest spring in Wiesbaden bubbles from the Kochbrunnen. The oldest buildings of Wiesbaden are grouped around the Schlossplatz.
Sights in Wiesbaden
Worth seeing are the Old Town Hall, the Market Church with its five towers and the City Palace, today the seat of the Hessian Parliament. The historic Kaiser-Friedrich Bad invites you to relax in Wiesbaden’s wonderful thermal waters.
Wiesbaden has many charms, ideal to explore the surroundings of Wiesbaden during a tour with a hire car. Worthwhile destinations are the Nero Valley with its mountain railway and the Schierstein harbour, a stroll along the harbour promenade promises Mediterranean flair.
A trip by hire car through the Rheingau region, with its vineyards, half-timbered towns and imposing castles, is particularly recommended.
