Discover Trier by Hire Car
The Palatine cathedral city of Trier is not only one of the oldest cities in Germany, but also one of the most beautiful.
The city offers pure relaxation, packed into a unique landscape on the Moselle, nestled in vineyards and forests.
Trier is also a gem of sights. Many of them can be easily reached on foot, but for more distant destinations, a hire car is a good idea.
Foundation of Trier
Trier was founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago and soon became the center of the Western Roman Empire. During the reign of Caesar Constantine, construction began on the Basilica of Constantine and the Imperial Cathedral. Even today, one encounters traces of Roman architecture at almost every step.
Some monuments are still partially preserved, others have been rebuilt. The mighty city gate Porta Nigra, the magnificent thermal baths or the Roman bridge, to name but a few.
At the Ancient Festival in the amphitheatre or a visit to the Rhenish State Museum, the interested visitor learns a lot about the life and work of the ancient Romans. Stately churches bear witness to the power of former church princes who had their main residence in Trier for centuries.
Sights in Trier
The Gothic Liebfrauenkirche or the baroque church Sankt Paulin are just as admirable as the Benedictine Abbey Sankt Matthias. If you are interested in plants, the historic park Nells Ländchen is just the right place.
Not to forget eighteenth-century Monaise Castle with its beautiful park or the Rococo Electoral Palace with snow-white sculptures in palace gardens. During a stroll through Trier’s historic old town past the market cross and the market fountain, cosy cafes invite you to linger.
When looking at the Gangolfkirche, the Dreikönigshaus or one of the colourful buildings from the bourgeoisie, one involuntarily thinks of the past, of people of all eras who also walked through these alleys.
