Discover Kiel by Hire Car
Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein and is located on the Baltic Sea in Germany. The city stretches on both sides of the Kiel Fjord.
The Kiel-Schilksee district hosted the sailing competitions during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics
Leisure in Kiel
During a summer holiday in Kiel several beaches offer themselves. At the Falckensteiner beach nudist bathing is tolerated next to textile bathing. City close is the Düsternbrooker beach section, while the eastern side of the Kiel Fjord has the newest beach section in Hasselfelde.
There is a pedal boat hire service and windsurfing facilities in Schilksee. Even in winter the lake has its charm; walking on the beach is very good for the respiratory system. Impressive are the bridges over the Nord- Ostseekanal. The shore of this canal invites to walks and bike rides. Or simply to watch the ships.
Shopping possibilities are numerous in Kiel. The Sophienhof shopping centre is located in the immediate vicinity of the railway station and the traditional city centre. Shopping in the city centre can be combined well with a visit to some churches worth seeing. In particular, the Marktkirche deserves a mention.
Not far from the inner-city pedestrian zone is the Kunsthalle. Next to the inner city, the old working-class district in Gaarden has a beautifully designed pedestrian zone. Many traces of Kiel’s past as an industrial city can also be discovered here; not least the buildings of the HDW shipyard.
Exploring the surroundings of Kiel
A holiday in Kiel also invites you to make excursions into the surrounding area. On the one hand, the way from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea is not very far; on the other hand, the fascinating steep coast lures to the Danish Wohld. For these trips it makes a lot of sense to hire car.
