Exploring the surroundings of Hanau
Whoever stays in Hanau should leave some time for a visit. It is quite advisable to possibly take a hire car, as some of Hanau’s sights are located a few kilometers outside.
There is, above all, the Hanau-Wilhelmsbad park and spa. Wilhelm IX of Hesse Kassel ruled as Count of Hanau during his father’s lifetime. He had Hanau-Wilhelmsbad developed into a spa complex.
The Komödienhaus regularly hosts events, and Wilhelmsbad is now also home to the German Doll Museum. For himself and his mistress, William IX had an ancient castle ruin built with luxurious apartments inside, where he could pursue his pleasures undisturbed by servants.
The Count of Hanau had the park built as an allegory, pleasure represented by an oversized merry-go-round, the castle ruins by secrecy, and an island by the mourning that the later Landgrave felt for his deceased favourite son, for whom he erected a tomb modelled on the Pyramid of Cestius in Rome.
The Count of Hanau was able to afford the construction thanks to the abundant bubbling of subsidy funds from England.
