Discover Dortmund by Hire Car
Dortmund has almost 600,000 inhabitants and about 280 square kilometres of urban area – for an exploration of the more than 80 districts, a hire car, which can be rented at the train station, the airport or one of the numerous other stations, is a good idea.
Sights in Dortmund
Around the historic city centre, 90 per cent of which was destroyed in the Second World War but can still be seen clearly within the multi-lane Wallring, Dortmund offers all the diversity of the Ruhr region in structural change:
From the huge former industrial sites left behind by Hoesch and others, where leisure facilities and techno-centres are now being built, to the villa districts set in greenery and the Hohensyburg gambling casino. Less than ten kilometres separate colliery estates from farming villages.
The university with technology park, the Stadtkrone Ost or other spectacular new buildings such as the concert hall point to the future.
Leisure activities in Dortmund
Dortmund is also a shopping metropolis for a wide catchment area, and on a Saturday lunchtime the “Golden Mile”, as the Westenhellweg pedestrian zone is known, is almost a cosmopolitan bustle.
Saturdays are also the day of the week when an out-of-town visitor can best feel where Dortmund’s heart beats: on Strobelallee, when Borussia plays its Bundesliga matches in one of Germany’s most beautiful and largest stadiums.
