Chemnitz is the third largest city in the Free State of Saxony and is home to more than 241,000 people. In addition to extensive green spaces and impressive parks, Chemnitz also has many interesting sights to offer.
A highlight for all art lovers is a visit to the Museum Gunzenhausers, Germany’s most important museum with the largest private collection of classical modern art in Germany. The city’s most famous landmark is the Karl Marx Monument, which is the second largest free-standing sculpted head in the world after the Egyptian Sphinx.
Further south, you will find the city’s oldest structure – the Red Tower and just a few steps away, the historic Double Town Hall with the impressive painting “Work – Prosperity – Beauty” by Max Klinger.
The most populous district in Chemnitz is the Kaßberg. Numerous cozy cafes, restaurants and shops invite you to stroll and linger here. If you visit the green city in May, you should not miss the Saxon Mozart Festival.
Equally recommended is the cultural festival “Begegnungen” in autumn with a contrasting mixture of theatre, music and dance. Architecturally significant is the ensemble at Theaterplatz with the impressive Chemnitzer Hof, St. Peter’s Church, the imposing Opera House and the King Albert Building.
