Located on the Aller River in the state of Lower Saxony is the old ducal city of Celle.
The city on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath is nationally known for its pretty closed old town centre with more than 400 half-timbered houses worth seeing.
Horse lovers also appreciate the town as the seat of the Lower Saxony State Stud, which helped Hanoverian warmblood breeding to achieve world fame. Moreover, Celle has one of the largest orchid breeding facilities in Europe, which should not be missed.
Sights in Celle
One of the highlights of the city, however, is Celle Castle, which boasts an impressive Renaissance façade with gables and oriels. In addition to the Residenzmuseum, this magnificent building also houses the Schlosstheater, the oldest theatre in Germany still in operation.
An interesting and cultural afternoon is promised by the Bomann Museum, which is located opposite the castle, on the edge of the old town. Here you will find folkloric and historical collections, the special attraction of which is a fully furnished farmhouse dating from 1571.
Other notable sights in Celle are the town hall in late Renaissance style and the town church of St. Marien with its Baroque interior and princely crypt, whose steeple can be climbed in summer.
The picturesque half-timbered houses should also not be missed on any sightseeing tour of Celle. The most beautiful half-timbered building is the Hoppener House, which is located in Poststraße. If you are looking for peace and quiet, the French Garden south of the old town is the place to be. Here you can take a distance from everyday life on long walks.
Leisure activities in Celle
Horse lovers will get their money’s worth at the Lower Saxony State Stud on the south bank of the Fuhse. The annual stallion parades held here between the end of September and the beginning of October are world-famous.
