Discover Burghausen by Hire Car
On the beautiful Salzach River right on the border with Austria lies the small town of Burghausen.
It belongs to the Upper Bavarian district of Altötting and its history goes way back to the Bronze Age.
Leisure activities in Burghausen
The Salzach River meanders right through the town and its two banks are an invitation to indulge in relaxing walks and recharge your batteries for the stressful daily grind.
High above the rooftops of Burghausen towers one of the most imposing and longest castles in the world. With a length of 1,043 metres, Burghausen Castle has secured itself an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Despite its great age of almost 1,000 years, the castle has by no means lost any of its grandeur. Consisting of six castle courtyards, it makes for an afternoon well worth seeing and steeped in history.
Burghausen is also home to the oldest hammer mill still in operation in Europe, which is definitely worth a visit. The best place to find out interesting facts about the town and the district is the Burghausen Town Museum, which is located in the main castle high above the town.
Within the city limits lies the small pilgrimage church of Marienberg. The interior of the church is decorated with lovingly designed paintings and magnificent statues. Another sacred building worth seeing is the Plague Chapel, which dates back to the sad times around 1900 and attracts its visitors with the Plague Cross and the Column of Honour.
