Discover Weeze by Hire Car
Weeze, with more than 10,000 inhabitants in an area of 80 square kilometres, is a lovely small town in North Rhine-Westphalia in the very west of Germany, not far from the Dutch border.
Located in the lowlands of the Niers, Weeze is about 24 kilometres from the district town of Kleve.
Frequently, the planes of low-cost airlines that have Düsseldorf as their destination airport land here.
Sights in Weeze
Although Weeze is first mentioned in a document in 1226, the history of settlement in the region goes back to the Stone Age, as evidenced by quite a few finds, such as the burial ground with its approximately 1000 mounds in nearby Kalbeck.
But also remains of an old Roman road or the famous copper axe from Baal were found here. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the old town centre of Weeze was almost completely destroyed.
However, three wonderful castles have been preserved with Schloss Hertefeld, located in the centre of the town and completely restored in 2004, Schloss Wissen and Schloss Kalbeck. Wissen is a moated castle surrounded by moats, which has still been in the family for 500 years and is one of the most important noble residences in the Lower Rhine.
Schloss Kalbeck in Weeze, on the other hand, was only built in the early 20th century in the historicist style and has a beautiful, baroque rose garden.
Recreational opportunities in Weeze
Once a year, usually in September, Weeze becomes a mecca for techno fans when the organisers of Q-Base invite you to a huge music spectacle on several stages with artists from different countries on the former English military site.
To enjoy the charming Lower Rhine countryside around Weeze, or to visit one of the many nearby cities such as Cologne and Düsseldorf, it is recommended to use a hire car.
