At the time of the first independence of the Lithuanian state, when Vilnius was under Polish administration, Kaunas was the capital.
The city is located at the mouth of the Neris River into the Memel River (Nemunas in Lithuanian). An inland lake, called the Kaunsasser Meer (Kaunas Sea), was created by a damming operation and offers a variety of water sports.

For shopping, in addition to the pedestrian zone, there is the daily market. Typical Lithuanian shopping life takes place primarily in the markets, so a visit there is very impressive.
A souvenir from Lithuania is primarily amber jewelry. Since a lot of amber is found in the Baltic States, it is relatively cheap to buy there.
Lovers of music and painting should visit the Ciurlionis Museum, where paintings by the artist are on display as well as demonstrations of his compositions. In addition, Kaunas is home to another art museum, which exhibits traditional and contemporary art, as well as an aviation museum.
Sights in Kaunas
In the city center of Kaunas are particularly worth seeing the city hall and numerous churches, of which the cathedral is to be mentioned first.
Furthermore, a visit to the Jesuit Church is recommended.
In the IX Fort, an exhibition commemorates the murder of the Jewish population of Lithuania during the Second World War. The history of the Jews of Kaunas occupies a large space in this exhibition; in addition, the extermination of Jewish life throughout Lithuania is reported.
A little outside the city of Kaunas are castle ruins worth seeing.
