Discover Lesbos by Hire Car

Lesbos is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea of Greece not far from the Turkish coast. With 90,000 inhabitants, about a third of whom live in the capital Mytilini (as the Greeks call the island).

Lesbos is quite a green, scenic island, made for individual tourists.

Far away from the crowds, a wonderful spot of primitive Greece has been preserved here, without lacking the necessary infrastructure.

Sights on Lesbos

Lesbos was first settled as early as the Bronze Age, and in ancient times the poet Sappho was born here in Eressos, whose paeans to love between women gave the island its name, though it should be noted that the islanders’ tolerance in this regard is limited. In the south of the island lies the enchanting village of Plomari.

Picturesque whitewashed houses with bright red roofs stretch up a hill and the scent of aniseed is unmistakable as you approach the little town on Lesvos. No wonder, as the best ouzo in all of Greece is said to come from the distilleries of Plomari.

Leisure activities in Lesvos

Lesbos should definitely be explored with a hire car, because on the island you have the choice between long sandy beaches and secluded coves, some of which, however, are difficult to reach without a car.

One of the most beautiful stretches of coastline is Vatera Beach, with its fine golden sand. It lies about 50 kilometres southwest of Mytilini and is awarded the blue flag by the EU every year.

Surrounded by pine trees and hot springs, on the other hand, is Geras beach on the gulf of the same name, about twelve kilometres from the capital on Lesvos. One of the most visited beaches is Petra beach in front of the village of Petra.
