The area around Mellieha has been settled since around 3000 BC, but constant raids by pirates prevented the town from growing.
The church of St. Marija towers over Mellieha, visible from afar. With its three towers, the imposing, neo-baroque structure was completed in 1948 and still houses a cave church with an early medieval image of the Madonna.

Nature lovers are not the only ones who get their money’s worth in the Ghadira Nature Reserve near Mellieha. In the bizarre landscape of the marshland, you can watch countless migratory birds on their journey to Africa or back home in spring and autumn, which stop off here in Malta.
