Discover Klaipeda by Hire Car
Klaipeda, the growing and thriving port city on the Baltic Sea, is the country’s third largest city and Lithuania’s gateway to Europe.
The population of around 200,000 is working energetically on the upswing and is happy to see many new shops, boutiques, bookstores and restaurants setting up shop in the university town, which is more than 750 years old.
Sights in Klaipeda
The German past of Klaipeda, the former Prussian fortress and trading town of Memel, is still present in many places.
In the historic old town is the neo-classical theatre with the restored Simon Dach monument and the Ännchen-von Tharau fountain. The main post office in Memel is still fully preserved and resembles an adventure museum, as all of Klaipeda’s postal operations are still handled here.
An insider’s tip is the brewery restaurant “Memelis”, in the former warehouse they serve very good beer directly from the brew kettle.
Exploring the surroundings of Klaipeda
The beautiful countryside around Klaipeda is best explored by hire car. Palanga, the most popular seaside resort for Lithuanians, is around 25 kilometres away and attracts visitors with its wonderfully wide and long sandy beach.
The very well-kept castle park invites you to stroll or visit the famous amber museum and the evening stroll along the beach promenade should definitely be enjoyed.
Klaipeda is also the gateway to a magnificent World Heritage Site, the Curonian Spit. Exploring this special landscape, whose beauty no one can escape, by hire car is a wonderful experience. Endless, fine-sand Baltic beaches; the Curonian Lagoon; and in between, large, imposing dune areas and sparse forests.
