The city of Cork is the capital of the county of the same name and also the economic, social and cultural centre of Southern Ireland.

In 2005 it received a high accolade, in that year it was European Capital of Culture.

In the course of this honour, the infrastructure as well as the road network were improved, which is particularly helpful for drivers who are unfamiliar with the area and drivers of hire cars.

Leisure Activities in Cork

The distinction continues to have an impact today, in the many interesting museums, such as the Butter Museum, in the wide variety of cultural events, in wonderful concerts of typical Irish music, and more.

Popular with locals and visitors alike are summer festivals with an appealing programme. The wonderful city centre is located on an island in the mouth of the River Lee.

The town, as well as the county as a whole, lends itself very well to outdoor excursions, whether on hiking trails, bike paths or on the water in a sailboat. Back in town you can indulge in the pubs, bars or excellent restaurants, they offer culinary delights as well as a quaint flair all their own.

There are countless buildings worth seeing, one of which is the cathedral, dedicated to Saint Finbar. In addition, a visit to the “Dromberg Stone Circle” at Glandore, the venerable “Blarney Castle” and the magnificent garden island “Garinish Island” is worthwhile.

After Dublin, Cork is the second largest city in Ireland. Its port is located just outside, in the town of Cobh.

A visit there should not be missed during a stay in the city, its atmosphere is indescribably beautiful.
