Gorgeous palazzi frame the large Piazza dell’Unita d’Italia, which you can visit next. One side of the piazza is open to the water, offering sweeping views of the sea. Very close to the piazza you will find a well-preserved Roman theatre. It was built in the first century AD.

Aquileia: Significant Mosaics
A hire car trip could take you to Aquileia first. In about an hour you will be there. If you visit the town today, with a population of just over 3,000, it is hard to imagine that more than 100,000 people lived there in Roman times. The excavations of the Roman city still bear witness to Aquileia’s importance as a trading metropolis. The absolute highlight of the town, however, is the Romanesque basilica, which was built in the 11th century. Inside you will find an extremely impressive mosaic floor, which dates back to the 4th century and runs through the entire nave.

Grado: picturesque old town
Continue your journey to Grado, which you will reach in just over a quarter of an hour. In Grado, you can first enjoy extensive sunbathing on one of the two enchanting sandy beaches, and then go hunting for original souvenirs in the winding alleys of the old town.

Duino: Castello with a view
Before you now head back to Trieste in your hire car, you still have the opportunity to stop off in Duino. You should allow a good half hour for the drive. In Duino you will find a picturesque harbour and above all the Castello di Duino in an exposed position with a great view of the sea and the coast. It is open to the public and worth a visit for its noble interior. A half-hour drive now separates you from Trieste.
