Exploring Termoli by Hire Car
Termoli is a medium-sized town in the province of Campobasso in southeastern Italy, with a population of just over 31,000 in an area of 55 square kilometres.
A picturesque old town, dominated by a mighty castle, a cathedral from Roman times and above all the looooong sandy beaches make Termoli a holiday destination worth seeing.
And there are also many enchanting places in the surrounding countryside, which are best reached by hire car. We have put together a few tips for hire car and travel.
Taking over the hire car
Many hire car customers reach Termoli via Abruzzo Airport in Pescara, where you will also find hire car agencies. Before you book your hire car, just make sure that your rental station is also located right at the airport. If you have booked with a rental company that only has a station near the airport, it can sometimes take a long time for a shuttle to take you to your hire car.
Booking the right hire car
Over 30,000 residents live in Termoli and many of them have a car. So you’d better book a small and manoeuvrable hire car that’s just big enough to hold all the passengers and holiday luggage. This will get you through the city traffic just fine and also make it easier to find a parking space.

Insuring the car properly
In a foreign city with an unfamiliar car, it’s easy to have an accident. Protect yourself and book a car with comprehensive insurance without deductible. With the liability, you should pay attention to the amount of coverage. It should be at least one million euros so that you have at least some protection if several vehicles are involved in an accident or people are injured. If the coverage of your hire car seems too low, you can provide additional protection with a so-called Mallorca policy. Let your insurance company advise you.
age limit
Be aware of the age limit of your rental company. Some hire car companies in Termoli and Pescara will not rent to drivers younger than 23. Others charge fees to drivers younger than 25. And some rental companies won’t hire car to seniors over 75.
Accessories
If you need accessories such as a navigation device or child seats, you should check whether your rental company has the desired items in its range before reserving the car. Reserve your desired equipment as early as possible to make sure it will be available on the day you pick up the car.
Language barrier
In Termoli and Pescara, you may find that the staff at some hire car agencies speak poor English. If you have written down the phone number of your rental company’s Italian head office before your trip, you can ask them for translation help in case of communication difficulties.
Free kilometers
The many delightful destinations around Termoli can be explored without a care in the world if you have booked a hire car with all kilometres free.
Tank control
If you’ve booked with a rental company where you pick up the car with a full tank of gas and return it with a full tank, you won’t have to argue about the correct level of gas in the tank when you return the car. Just make sure you keep the last fuel receipt in a safe place. This will allow you to prove that you did indeed fill up the car last just before returning it.
Bail
It is equally important to book with a rental company that only blocks the deposit for the car on your credit card. After all, if the money is charged off, it can take a long time for the amount to be returned to your account once the car is returned. And before you travel, make sure your card’s credit line is sufficient to pay the deposit.
Customer Satisfaction Hire Car
Long waiting times and the external condition of some rental vehicles are criticized by some customers. Especially when returning the car, plan enough time so as not to miss the plane. And inquire about the opening hours of your rental station before your trip. Before you start your hire car trip, inspect your vehicle carefully for defects such as scratches or dents. Have all damage confirmed in writing in a defect report and keep the document safe. This is the only way to avoid being held liable for damage that you did not cause when you return the vehicle.
Safety hire car
Most rental vehicles in Termoli and Pescara are perfectly roadworthy. However, there can always be exceptions, so be sure to test your car’s lights before your first trip. Don’t forget your indicators and brake lights. Also, do a quick brake test in your rental company’s parking lot. And check that there are high-visibility vests for all passengers, a warning triangle and first-aid kit on board.
Sights in Termoli
Castello Svevo: Mighty Feasts
At Castello Svevo the city stroll could begin. It was built in the 13th century and served as a castle for Emperor Frederick II. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public and can therefore only be visited from the outside. Directly after the Castello, the old town begins with its narrow streets lined with medieval-looking houses. Here you can stroll to your heart’s content and hunt for souvenirs in typical little shops.
Domo: Romanesque masterpiece
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to visit the city’s cathedral. It was built in the 12th century. Especially the bright facade, with some pretty decorations, inspires visitors. Inside, a sober nave supported by mighty columns awaits you. A walk to the long sandy beach could round off your stroll through the town. Here you can go for long walks, relax in the sun or enjoy a swim in the waters of the Mediterranean.
Find a good restaurant
Specializing primarily in fish dishes is the restaurant La Nuova Mangiatoia. Freshly caught seafood is served as an appetizer. The grilled fish is almost worth its own trip.
Find a good hotel
Since most tourists are drawn to smaller towns along the coast, good hotels in Termoli are in short supply. We recommend the Residenza Sveva. The hotel is spread over several buildings in the old town. All rooms are stylishly decorated and offer amenities such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
An interesting destination in the area
Vasto: Picturesque old town
Direct the hire car to Vasto. For the 29 kilometers you need about half an hour. A splendid old town awaits you in Vasto, much of which was built in the 15th century. Even older is the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe, which was already built in the 13th century. It is a prime example of the simple Romanesque architectural style.
After the tour, you can visit the mighty Caldora Castle. It was built in the 15th century and towers over the town with its mighty walls.
When you now stroll through the alleys of the old town, there is always a dreamlike view of the sea and the coast. A visit to the nearby seaside resort of Vasto Marina could round off the trip. There you will find a modern holiday centre with well-kept beaches and nice restaurants. Stroll along the long beach, lie down in the warm sand, listen to the sound of the sea.

L'Aquila: Enchanting Mountain Town
Your hire car journey could take you to L'Aquila first. You can reach the town by hire car in about two and a half hours. The capital of Abruzzo, located at an altitude of 700 meters inspires with the mixture of small town flair and numerous sights. Start your stroll at the mighty Castello, which was built by the Spanish in the 16th century. Today the Castello houses the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo, where you can learn a lot about the history of the region. The city tour continues to the Basilica di San Bernadino, which was built between 1454 and 1472 and whose interior enchants with baroque splendour. Before you get back into your hire car, you should stroll to the Fontana della 99 Cannelle not far from the train station. Fresh spring water has been gushing out of 93 stone heads there since 1272. The six remaining openings without heads symbolize the villages that became the city of L'Aquila over time.
Celano: Castello with a view
Continue your journey in just under an hour to Celano. In the picturesque mountain village, it is worth paying a visit to the Castello Picolomini. Anyone standing in front of the magnificent castle, which was built between 1392 and 1451, will hardly believe that the building was almost completely destroyed in an earthquake in 1915. The restorers have done a great job here. Inside the castle you will find the Museo d'arte sacra della Marsica where you can admire sacred art and learn about the history of the place. After the visit to the museum, you will still have the opportunity to enjoy the splendid view of the surrounding area that can be seen from the castle.
