Discover Salerno by Hire Car
Salerno is a major city on the gulf of the same name in the Campania region of southern Italy, with a population of about 150,000 in an area of just under 60 square kilometres.
Extremely picturesque, the city nestles in the northern half of the almost semicircular bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Sights in Salerno
The first mentions of the port city of Salerno date back to the second century BC, when the hitherto Greek settlement became a colony of the Roman Empire.
In the Middle Ages, Salerno stood out for its famous medical school, which was founded as a branch of the nearby monastery of Monte Cassino. Sick people from all over Europe came to picturesque Salerno in search of healing, especially when a standard work of the time was translated from Arabic into Latin here. The impressive monastery with its unique architecture, in which the master Bramante himself is said to have had a hand, is very picturesquely situated on a 516-metre hill, and is ideally reached by hire car.
No less imposing is the Castello di Arechi, perched like a landmark on Bonadies above the city of Salerno. Dating in part from Norman times, the castle was named in the seventh century after the Longobard prince of the same name. In the Duomo di S. Matteo, the cathedral of Salerno, two personalities are laid to rest. Once lies Saint Gregory here, but the evangelist Matthew is also said to be buried here.
Exploring the Salerno countryside
With a hire car, it’s also definitely worth taking a detour to Paestum, just under 50 kilometers away. An archaeological sensation, the three best-preserved temples from the Doric period in the world can be marvelled at here.
