Discover Forlì by hire car
Forlì in Emilia Romagna is a city of over 100,000 inhabitants.
Tourists tend to visit here only briefly, although the largely medieval old town gives off the right holiday feel.
The sea, with gorgeous beaches, is not far away and there are many picturesque towns in the area that can be easily reached by hire car. For rental and travel we have compiled a few tips.
Taking over the hire car
When renting your hire car, pay close attention to where your rental company’s station is located. Some hire car stations are located far outside the city centre and it can be a real odyssey to get there.
Booking the right hire car
If you want to get around primarily in the turbulent city traffic of Forlì, you should go for a car that is as small as possible, so that you can also use narrow parking spaces. For long journeys in the countryside, on the other hand, you can opt for a slightly larger and more comfortable car, as most of the roads around Forlì are well-maintained.
Hire car prices
It’s not entirely cheap to hire a car in Forlì. You can often get the best deals by booking well in advance of your trip and using our handy price comparison tool.

Insuring the car properly
With an unfamiliar hire car, it’s easy to have an accident in Forlì’s lively traffic. Protect yourself and book a hire car with comprehensive insurance without excess. With the liability, you should make sure that the amount of coverage is at least one million euros.
Because if people are injured in an accident, you can expect very high costs. If the coverage amount of your rental company does not seem sufficient, you can provide further protection with a so-called Mallorca policy. Your insurance company will be happy to advise you.
age limit
You must be 21 years old to hire car from most rental companies in Forlì. And drivers younger than 25 are often charged an additional fee. Ask about your rental company’s terms and conditions before renting the car.
Accessories
If you need accessories such as child seats or a navigation system, you must always order these separately from your hire car company. Make reservations well in advance to avoid the equipment you want not being available on the day you pick up your car.
Language barrier
In Forlì, it may well happen that an employee of a hire car station speaks poor English. In case of communication difficulties, it can help to call the Italian head office of your hire car company. With a little luck, you will find an employee there who speaks the language and can help you with the translation.
Free kilometers
There is so much to discover in the Forlì area that it pays to book a hire car with all kilometres free. This way you can enjoy your excursions without worrying about the mileage.
Tank control
When you book with a rental company where you pick up the car with a full tank of gas and return it with a full tank of gas, you avoid having to discuss the correct level of gas in the tank when you return it.
Bail
Be careful to book with a rental company that only blocks the deposit on your credit card. After all, if the amount is actually charged, it may take longer for the money to be returned to your account once the car is returned. And before you travel, check that your card’s credit limit is sufficient to cover the deposit.
Customer Satisfaction Hire Car
In Forlì, there are always complaints about the external condition of many rental vehicles. Always have scratches, dents and other damage confirmed in a defects report and keep the document safe. This is the only way to avoid being held responsible for damage that you did not cause when you return the car.
Safety hire car
Since hire cars in Forlì may not be adequately maintained, you should check the roadworthiness of your car as much as possible before your first trip. First of all, test that the lights are working. Don’t forget the brake lights and indicators either.
Look to see if your car’s oil level is correct. Make sure first-aid kit, warning triangle and safety vests are on board. Check the tread of the tyres and do a short brake test in the parking lot of the rental company. Then check the air pressure of the tyres at the first petrol station before you start your journey with the hire car.
Sights in Forlì
Perhaps start your stroll at Corso Garibaldi and stroll down the magnificent street lined with Renaissance and Baroque palazzi. The church of San Mercuriale is well worth the visit. At 75 metres high, the bell tower is one of the tallest in Italy and was built back in 1190.
The Rocca di Ravaldino citadel is also worth a look. It dates back to the 15th century and impresses with its mighty reddish walls, which give it a fortified look. Incidentally, this was also the view of the programmers of the computer game Assassins Creed 2, who used this citadel as a backdrop.
In the Museo San Domenico you can now still learn about the history of the city and the region. Perhaps as you stroll around the city after your visit to the museum, you’ll notice some buildings that don’t quite want to fit into the streetscape. Many of them were built during the period of Italian fascism.
Discover a good restaurant
Emilia Romagna is known for its excellent cuisine and so there are some very good restaurants in Forlì too. We recommend the Ristorante Convivio. Here local specialities of the very best quality are brought to the plate. But this cuisine is also not closed to innovative ideas.
Find a nice hotel
Since many tourists only briefly roam the city, the choice of hotels is limited. We recommend the Grand Hotel Forlì. This modern establishment has been awarded four stars. You can expect good comfort in a pleasant ambience.
A worthwhile destination in the area
Direct the hire car to Rimini and be pleasantly surprised. It takes less than an hour to drive to the town, which is 56 kilometres away. Rimini has done a lot to shed its image as a “Teutonic grill”.
Of course, endless beaches paved with countless sun loungers and parasols await you here. But there’s also a charming old town with quaint shops, chic cafes and excellent restaurants to discover.
It’s best to enjoy a long sunbath in the morning. You’ll find that many Italian families have discovered Rimini as a seaside resort. It’s a hive of activity and the bambini in particular enjoy the pleasures of swimming to the full.
In the afternoon, you can then stroll through the city and along the beach promenade and think about where the next trip with the hire car should go.
Suggestion for a trip by hire car
Imola: Legendary Race Track
A nice round trip with the hire car could lead you first to Imola. In three quarters of an hour you are there. In Imola, if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to watch Italian sports cars being chased around the track for testing purposes at the famous Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari racetrack. You can also be chauffeured around the track yourself. It’s a treat that’s only recommended for travellers with a stable stomach.
Ravenna: Magnificent Mosaics
Continue your journey in just over half an hour to Ravenna, where you should especially take a look at the churches, which are decorated with exceedingly magnificent mosaics. Start your stroll at the Basilica San Vitale, built between 525 and 548. Here it is above all the presbytery, whose mosaics show the imperial couple Justinian and Theodora, which captivates visitors. But also the rest of the richly decorated interior makes many a guest linger for hours.
Continue your stroll to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia which was built between 425 and 430. Don’t be fooled by the inconspicuous exterior. Inside, fantastic mosaics await you again, making the visitors’ eyes glaze over. If you can’t get enough of the mosaics, the 6th century Basilica Sant'Apolinare Nuovo is another worthwhile destination. Since the interior is completely empty, the decorations are shown off to their best advantage.
Marina di Ravenna: Relaxing on the beach
Before steering the hire car back to Forlì, you can still enjoy extensive sunbathing on the beautiful sandy beach in Marina di Ravenna, which you can reach in half an hour, and then refresh yourself with a dip in the sea. In three quarters of an hour you will be back in Forlì, where you can review the events of the day.

Forlì is ideally suited as a location for a trip with a hire car. In the city, which is ignored by the streams of tourists, you can observe real Italian everyday life and many worth seeing destinations in the surrounding area can be reached easily by car.
