Discover Brindisi by hire car

Brindisi, Apulian port city far in the south of Italy, is a love at second sight for many tourists.

First, you’ll find a city heavily influenced by industrialization, with numerous sins of construction.

But if you stroll through the streets, you will discover many monuments from long ago, interesting museums, beautiful markets and elegant pedestrian streets.

And the surrounding countryside also has a lot to offer and is great to explore by hire car. For rental and travel we have compiled a few tips.

Taking over the hire car

At Brindisi airport, there are numerous rental companies located in the hire car station near the arrivals terminal. However, you should make sure that your hire car company is there before booking the car. After all, if their office is just around the airport, a lot of time may pass before a shuttle takes you there.

Booking the right hire car

Narrow roads, spirited driving by locals and a chronic shortage of parking in cities make it advisable to book a small and nimble hire car.

With it you can get through anywhere, react quickly in dicey situations and find a parking space more easily. Just make sure when booking that the boot of your hire car is big enough to hold your holiday luggage.

Hire car prices

Hire car prices in Brindisi tend to be in the mid-range. You can often get the cheapest rates by booking well in advance of your trip and using our handy price comparison tool.

Insuring the car properly

The driving style of many Brindisi residents is rather unorthodox. An accident can happen quickly here. You are well insured if you book a hire car with comprehensive insurance without excess. Pay attention with the liability to the height of the sum insured. It should be at least one million euros.

Because if there are injured in an accident, it quickly becomes very expensive. If you want to take out additional insurance, you can take out a so-called Majorca policy for further protection. Talk to your insurance company.

age limit

You must be 21 to hire car in Brindisi with most hire car companies. And drivers under the age of 25 often pay an additional fee. Some hire car companies do not rent vehicles to people older than 75. Check with your provider’s terms and conditions before booking.

Accessories

A navigation device can make your journey through southern Italy much easier. And if children are travelling with you, suitable child seats belong on board. No matter what accessories you need, you must always order the equipment early with your rental company. This is the only way to be sure that the items you want will be available on the day of your rental.

Language barrier

It is not uncommon for staff at hire car stations in Brindisi to speak poor English. With luck, you may be able to reach a member of staff at your hire car company’s Italian head office by phone who can provide translation assistance. Make a note of the phone number of the central office before you travel.

Free kilometers

Apulia is a beautiful but also vast region. Book a hire car with all the kilometres free to explore as much as possible.

Remember the tank regulation

Make sure to book with a rental company where you pick up the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. This way you avoid having to argue about the correct level of the tank when you return the car.

Bail

You are well advised to book with a hire car company that only blocks the deposit due on your credit card. After all, if the amount is actually collected, it can sometimes take longer for the money to be returned to your account once the car is returned.

Customer Satisfaction Hire Car

Although most customers are quite satisfied with the hire car in Brindisi, some do complain of long waiting times. So especially when returning the car, allow a generous cushion of time to avoid missing the plane. There are also complaints about the external condition of some vehicles.

Examine your vehicle closely when you pick it up and always get written confirmation of any damage, such as scratches or dents. Keep the protocol well during the trip. This is the only way you can prove that you are not responsible for the damage to the vehicle when you return it.

Safety hire car

Although most hire cars in Brindisi are quite roadworthy, there are exceptions. Before your first drive, check all of your car’s lights. Don’t forget the brake light and turn signals either.

Make sure the first-aid kit, high-visibility vest and warning triangle are in the car. Check the tread on the tyres and the oil level. Do a little brake test while still in the parking lot. And test the tyre pressure at the first petrol station.

Sights in Brindisi

Monumentum al Marinaio: Memorial with a view
A pretty tour of the city could start at the Monumentum al Marinaio. The fascists erected this colossus, which at first sight seems rather repulsive. But the monument that was built between 1932 and 1933 to commemorate the soldiers that died in the first world war has the advantage that one can get to the top by a lift. From here, there are fantastic views of the city and surrounding area.

Colonne Romane: Roman Column
Journey far into Brindisi’s history when you visit the Colonne Romane. The mighty column dates back to the second century AD. Originally, two columns stood here, marking the end of the Via Appia.

Museo Archeologico: Experience the past
Visitors can get a comprehensive overview of the history of the city and the region at the Museo Archeologico. Here, among other things, you can expect to see votive figures made of terracotta, including a Venus from the third century BC. At the Chiesa San Giovanni al Sepolcro, you have the opportunity to admire an ancient church. It was built around 1100 AD, modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Piazzo Mercato: Lively market hustle and bustle
On the Piazzo Mercato you can then enjoy the bustling life. Merchants sell here food from the region and all over the world. Afterwards, you still have the opportunity to go on an extensive shopping tour on the elegant Corso Garibaldi, a large pedestrian zone.

Find a good restaurant

It is no problem to find a good restaurant in Brindisi with regional cuisine. Especially the sea specialties are quite excellent here. Visit the Pescatore laccato. The best fish dishes are served here in a simple ambience.

Find a good hotel

Since most tourists only stop in town for a short time, there are few hotels. We recommend the Hotel Internazionale. It was built in the early 19th century and impresses with its elegance. The rooms are comfortable and the location is central.

Discover a delightful destination in the area

Ostuni: Charming Holiday Town
Direct your hire car to the enchanting town of Ostuni. You’ll reach the town, 38 kilometres away, in just 40 minutes, but then you’ll find yourself in a different world. If Brindisi seems loud and hectic at first, the charm of a typical holiday destination surrounds you in Ostuni. The alleys are lined with whitewashed houses. Often they are so narrow that you can only explore them on foot. Picturesque olive groves stretch all around Ostuni, and nearby you can unwind on long, fine-sand dune beaches.

In the town itself, be sure to visit the cathedral. It was built from 1435 and is a prime example of the late Gothic architectural style. Now you still have the opportunity to stroll through the narrow streets, find a nice souvenir in one of the small shops, enjoy a drink in a bar and plan at your leisure which destinations around Brindisi you want to visit next.

Suggestion for a trip by hire car

Monopoli: holiday destination of the Italians
First stop of a hire car trip from Brindisi could be Monopoli. In just under an hour you will be there. The “only city” impresses with picturesque little bays, excellent restaurants, an enchanting harbour and the picturesque old town. The big tourist streams have not yet discovered Monopoli. Here the Italian holidaymakers are still largely among themselves and celebrate the Dolcefarniente in the summer months.

Bari: Shopping Paradise
Continue your journey in three quarters of an hour to Bari. Here, especially shopaholics will be happy, because in the modern new town, boutique after boutique is lined up. All Italian designer brands but also international labels are represented. Those who prefer to take it easy can stroll through the alleys of the old town where families sit in front of the houses, chatting and forming the typical orecchiette pasta by hand.

Taranto: Important Museum
Before you head back to Brindisi in your hire car, you could stop off in Taranto. In just over an hour, you will have reached your destination. Taranto is a worthwhile destination, especially for those interested in history, as it has an archaeological museum that is one of the most important in Italy.

Discover an Italy from the time when the Greeks still ruled the culture and when Taranto was the capital of Greater Greece. The museum is open daily from 08:30 to 19:30. A ticket costs 7.50 euros. In just under an hour, your hire car will take you back to Brindisi, where you can review the day’s events.

Conclusion

The proximity to the airport and the numerous worthwhile destinations in the surrounding area make Brindisi an ideal location for a trip by hire car. And with our handy price comparison, you won’t have a hard time finding a suitable car at great rates.
