Discover Rennes by Hire Car
Rennes is a large city in Brittany in western France, with a population of just over 200,000 in an area of 50 square kilometres.
The city’s roots date back to the Roman Empire, where it was documented under the name Condate.
Today, Rennes is the metropolis for Breton culture. Since 1985, even the street signs in the city have been bilingual.
Sights in Rennes
Of particular importance for the whole of Brittany is the parliament building in the centre of Rennes. Built in the 17th century by means of the royal wine tax, it still houses the region’s highest legal authority.
In earlier times, however, not only did the court meet here, but the place was also understood to symbolise royal power in Rennes. The transformation of the forecourt in 1726 into the ‘Place Royale’ with an equestrian statue of Louis XIV reinforces this impression.
Extremely picturesque is above all the beautiful, medieval old town of Rennes with its numerous colourful half-timbered houses. Many small cafes and bars invite here especially to Cr?pes and Cidre, the specialties of Brittany.
No less interesting is the 15th-century Chapel of Saint-Yves, which has valuable exhibits and displays about Rennes’ Breton heritage.
Leisure options in Rennes
In July, Rennes becomes a mecca for lovers of experimental music. Known far beyond the city’s borders, the festival “Les tombées de la nuit” transforms the town into a single body of sound when music of all styles is heard in all sorts of unusual places. Original and spontaneous productions are then the order of the day.
Due to the vastness of Rennes and attractive destinations in the surrounding area, it is advisable to hire a car.
