Discover Quimper by Hire Car
Quimper is a medium-sized town in Brittany in western France, with a population of more than 63,000 in an area of just under 85 square kilometres.
The name means “confluence” in its Breton origin, referring to the delta formed by the Frout, Steir, and Odet rivers in Quimper.
For four centuries now, the town has been a metropolis of porcelain manufacture in the country, and even today you can see the various stages of production in many workshops.
Sights in Quimper
The Cathedral of St. Corentin rises impressively above Quimper. The church, whose construction began in 1240 but was not completed until 600 years later, is also a symbol of the city and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. A curiosity of the church is the choir, which is inclined to the left and makes a clear bend. According to legends, the construction of the building was intended to avoid a burial chapel, but this has never been proven.
Extremely picturesque is also the fantastic old town of Quimper. Leaning half-timbered houses on centuries-old natural stone foundations, which have been very lovingly restored, immediately give visitors a feeling of romantic cosiness.
Leisure activities in Quimper
The numerous street cafes, bars and restaurants act as lively splashes of colour in this and invite you to linger.
The three historic districts of Quimper can be found in Locmaria, with its beautiful 12th-century monastery complex, in the Bishop’s Town, where remains of the old town wall can still be seen, and in the ‘Duke’s Town’, which shines above all with its dreamy houses around the ‘Place Terre au Duc’ or in the ‘Rue du Chapeau Rouge’. Due to the vastness of Quimper, the city is best explored by hire car.
