Discover Montpellier by Hire Car
About ten kilometers from the Mediterranean coast is one of the largest cities in France, Montpellier.
Hilly countryside surrounds the city in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, so excursions into the surrounding area are also worthwhile.
The River Lez plays a large part in the town’s appearance. To that end, it can serve as a landmark for drivers unfamiliar with the area.
Sights in Montpellier
Montpellier is the capital of the département of Hérault and, along with Paris and Toulouse, a major university city. Three universities whose venerable buildings pleasantly define much of the cityscape. Moreover, it is always refreshing to see the numerous students populating the public squares and streets. Near the university is the magnificent Saint Pierre Cathedral, it is the largest church in the city.
A visit to the Antigone district is recommended due to several buildings designed by Ricardo Bofill, a Catalan architect. A bit more cosy and contemplative is the atmosphere in the Botanical Garden, the first of its kind in France. It is a popular meeting place in Montpellier, especially for the younger generation.
