Discover Limoges by Hire Car
Limoges is a town in the northwestern Massif Central, right in the heart of France.
With 131,000 inhabitants in just under 78 square kilometres, it lies directly on the Vienne River, which meanders picturesquely through Limoges.
A hire car will give you the independence you need to explore the city and its surroundings.
History of Limoges
During the Middle Ages, Limoges rose to fame and prosperity largely due to its artistry in porcelain production. Even today, more than half of France’s porcelain comes from the former royal manufactories.
The freedom-loving inhabitants of Limoges were ardent supporters of the French Revolution and were among the first to strike for better working conditions in the early 19th century, which earned Limoges the nickname “Rome of Socialism”. No wonder, then, that the French General Confederation of Trade Unions (CGT) was founded here in 1895.
Sights in Limoges
In addition to the Limoges Porcelain Museum, there are many medieval buildings to admire in the city, especially churches from the 13th and 14th centuries. The most beautiful of these are the cathedral of Saint-?tienne, as well as the church of Saint-Micheldes-Lions, and Saint-Pierre-des-Queyroix.
Also as picturesque as the sacred buildings, are the bridges over the Vienne, which impressively characterizes the cityscape of Limoges. Another highlight of the town is the historic “Village de la Boucherie”. The fact that it still exists today in its perfect beauty is due solely to the creative efforts of the butchers of Limoges, who convinced the city fathers over pork loin and tripe to prevent the planned demolition of the quarter.
Due to the vastness of Limoges, it is advisable to explore the city by hire car.
