Renting a car will give you the independence you need to explore the town and its surroundings.
History of Ajaccio
The town’s interesting history still shapes its image today: in 1492, Ajaccio was built by the Genoese, the original site being about two kilometres from the town’s current geographical location. Between 1553 and 1559, Ajaccio was occupied by the French, but fell back to the Genoese after the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, and ultimately became definitively part of France in 1768.
Ajaccio’s most famous son is without doubt Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here on 15 August 1769. With 52,880 inhabitants, Ajaccio is the most populous town in Corsica and also the seat of government of the Dèpartement Corse-du-Sud. The city has a modern international airport (Campo Dell Oro) as well as an idyllically located seaport.
