Sights Niort
First founded by the Romans, today the townscape of Niort is mainly defined by medieval buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The church of Notre-Dame, for example, with its 76-metre-high Gothic towers, towers impressively over a hill in the town. The interior of the clerical building is also imposingly designed, housing a mausoleum as well as the baptismal font of Françoise d'Aubigné.
Unwinding the soul
Equally remarkable are the two donjos of Niort, which in the Middle Ages formed the central unit of Richard the Lionheart’s castle as living and woe towers. Today, they house an archaeological museum.
A wonderful way to unwind in Niort is to take a stroll along the Sèvre Niortaise, a charming river that meanders picturesquely through the town. The Coulée verte, a shady promenade, leads past extremely picturesque bridges from which you have a good view of the donjons.
Exploring the surrounding countryside by hire car
Niort and the surrounding area should definitely be explored with a hire car, especially since some nearby destinations can only be reached this way. This definitely includes the necropolis of Bougon with its tumuli, some of which are almost 7000 years old.
A side trip to the Atlantic coast, about an hour’s drive away, and the port city of La Rochelle is also more than worthwhile.
Entertainment of a very special kind is offered by the nearby Futuroscope near Poitiers. Here there are several cinemas with various special effects, such as wind, water and moving seats, which make a visit to the cinema a unique experience.
