Discover Puerto Montt by Hire Car
A beautiful city in Chile: 1000 kilometres south of the capital Santiago lies the port city of Puerto Montt. It was founded in 1853 by the then president Manuel Montt.
Today, it is home to about 100,000 inhabitants. It offers a varied landscape with volcanoes, mountains and forests.
Leisure activities in Puerto Montt
Puerto Montt is a lively port city full of contrasts. Wooden and corrugated iron huts stand side by side with modern concrete buildings. For a cosy atmosphere, take a detour by hire car to the fishing harbour with its restaurants.
Here you can find fresh fish and seafood straight from the ocean. It’s always lively here. The German influence on this town can still be seen today. Hundreds of German immigrant families settled here in the 19th century.
Typical of this area, therefore, are the wooden houses in the Black Forest style. However, few residents still speak the German language today. It is more likely to watch the traditional Chilean dance. Wearing traditional ponchos and boots, even the youngest ones dance the “cueca”.
Discover the surroundings of Puerto Montt
As another tour with the hire car is a trip to the lake Llanquihue, which is almost a third larger than Lake Constance. Here is also the volcano Osorno with its 2660 meters.
A short detour takes you to the town of Frutillar with its German Immigrant Museum.
