Discover Calama by Hire Car
Calama, located 2,250 meters above sea level, is one of the most important cities in the Antofagasta region.
It wasn’t always this way. Originally, Calama was nothing more than a wayside stop and camp until it was discovered by Diego de Almagro and Pedro de Valdivia.
During a slow process, Calama became the important administrative center of Bolivia. In 1879, Calama was occupied by Chile during the War of the Pacific and has been part of Chile ever since.

It’s worth a trip by hire car to the entrance to another world: San Pedro de Atacama, the driest desert landscape in the world with its archaeological museum.
Further, you will find an impressive natural landscape with its vast salt flats and a few indigenous villages, where the traditions and customs of the inhabitants still continue today.
Very beautiful churches rise along the length of the territory. The oldest church in Chile is San Pedro de Atacama, whose roof was built with cactus trunks.
