Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico’s most famous tourist destinations.
Once an important Mayan culture settlement called “Xaman Ha”, in recent years a small fishing village became today’s elegant resort town with more than 100,000 permanent residents.
Playa del Carmen is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera Maya. Only about 60 km from Cancun, the white town on Mexico’s Caribbean coast attracts sun worshippers, party vacationers and water sports enthusiasts from all over the world.
Leisure activities in Playa del Carmens
Just off the coast of Playa del Carmen lies the island of Cozumel. It is connected to the city by a regular ferry line. In the main street “La Quinta Avenida”, a lively promenade, there are numerous shops, restaurants with international cuisine, discos and bars.
Worth seeing is the historic lighthouse. Playa del Carmen’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the Yucatan and are covered with fine white sand. Off the coast stretches the second largest reef in the world, the “Great Maya Reef”, a magnificent underwater world for divers and deep-sea anglers.
The nature reserve of Sian Kaan adjoins the place. It was already declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and shows the great diversity of the – on Yucatan living – flora – and fauna.

Nearly 60 km south of Playa del Carmen are the famous ruins of Tulum.
