Merida is the capital of the Yucatan Peninsula and region of Mexico. The “white city” is located near the Gulf of Mexico somewhat inland.

It is one of the most typical cities in Mexico, with wonderful colonial buildings from the Spanish period and small, flat and colorful houses. Due to its central location in the region and simultaneous proximity to the Mexican Gulf, one has wonderful excursion possibilities, especially with a hire car.

If you drive out of Merida with your hire car in the direction of the Gulf of Mexico, you will come to the national park “Celestun”. A very shallow freshwater river runs parallel to the sea. You can sail it with small boats, admire the numerous flamingos, herons and many other water birds and listen to unknown birds in the mangrove forests.

On the gulf itself is an excellent beach for swimming in the tepid waters.

If you drive inland, we recommend the Puuk road with the Mayan sites of Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak and Labn? Via the “careta 184” you come to an ancient ceremonial cave of the Mayas with wonderful stalagmites and stalagtites.

Uxmal with the high Maya pyramids is also not far away and in Kohunlich there are stucco masks of more than 2 m size. Mayap?n was the last Mayan capital.
