Discover Lahti by Hire Car
It’s hard to believe that the world-famous Finnish industrial and sports town of Lahti, just over 100 years ago, had a population of just 100.
The economic boom only began after World War 2.
In the meantime, the modern metropolis has moulted properly in various fields.
Sights in Lahti
Whoever has planned their holiday in Southern Finland would be well advised to take a detour to this young city located on the Vesijärvi River. By means of your own motor vehicle or hire car, it’s a breeze to head to a wide variety of destinations. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, there is always something going on in Lahti.
Taking a spin through the city itself, you can marvel at the typical Finnish architecture. Connoisseurs will not get rid of the impression that probably all the master builders who have laid hands here, have gone to the old master Alvar Aalto in the apprenticeship.
Exploring the Lahti area
Somehow all tourists are drawn towards the foothills of the Salpausselkä mountain range. There you will find the not-to-be-missed ski jumping complex, where national and international competitions are held every year.
In summer, the runs are used as large-scale swimming pools. The ingenuity of Finnish architects and modern technology make it possible.
Now it’s time to delve a little into the history of the host country. To do so, steer the hire car, just a few miles northwest. The destination is the 13th-century church of Hollola.
Quite nearby is Finland’s highest mountain, at 223 metres. The view from Tiirismaa over Lahti is hard to describe in words. Not to be overlooked is Päijänne, a long lake on which, in summer, extensive boat trips can be taken, all the way up to Jyväskylä, the young university town.
