Sights in Santo Domingo
The centrepiece of a visit to Santo Domingo is the Alcázar de Colón.
Built by Diego Colón, son of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus, in the sixteenth century, this sophisticated palace was used as the Spanish seat of government.
Today it presents an interesting museum that reflects the feudal life of Santo Domingo’s former government plaza.
Also rising very imposingly is the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor in Plaza Colón. It looks like a fortress and was the first cathedral in the former newly discovered world. Some very valuable altars and the allegedly found here bones of Christopher Columbus make this cathedral an exciting place of pilgrimage.
The tomb of Columbus has been transferred to the Faro de Colón and can be seen here.
