The most important sight in the city is El Monumento, a column nearly 70 meters high, on top of which stands a statue of Jesus.
Built at the request of dictator Trujillo in the 1940s, the monument is meant to commemorate the Dominican Republic’s resistance to Spanish colonial rule. Inside the monument is an elevator to the upper platform. From it, there is a beautiful view of the city and its surrounding countryside.
El Monumento is located at the end of Calle del Sol, the main shopping street of Santiago de los Caballeros. Here you will find many small shops, stalls and flying merchants.
In addition to clothing and food, rum and cigars, the city’s two specialties, are also on sale.
Leisure activities in Santiago de los Caballeros
Santiago is world famous for its cigar factories. There, the cigars are still made by hand and exported as luxury items all over the world.
Some of the factories are open to visitors and offer guided tours for tourists. There is also a tobacco museum that focuses on the tradition of tobacco production in the Dominican Republic.
The city’s two rum factories also offer tours for visitors and tastings of their products.
From Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros can be easily reached via the Duarte highway. So it’s well worth renting a car and paying a visit to the city of rum and cigars.
