Exploring Gdansk by Hire Car
Danzig is the German name of the port city of Gdansk in Poland.
Once a historic Hanseatic city, Gdansk is now the centre of the large Tri-City city association, which also includes the nearby Baltic Sea cities of Sopot and Gdynia.
They are connected to Gdansk by a suburban railway network. The city has been shaped by a long and varied history, which is reflected in the streets of the historic centre.
Sights in Gdansk
The most important architectural monuments of Gdansk are located in the Right Town, which is usually considered the Old Town by visitors. The main square is the Long Market with the Green Gate, the famous Arthus Court and the Right Town Hall.
The boulevard leading away from the square is also called Königsgasse. This was the way kings came to the city in the Middle Ages.
In the Old Town proper stands St. Mary’s Church, the largest brick sacred building in the world, which can seat about 25,000 worshippers.
At the church begins the famous Frauengasse, a street lined with beautiful medieval town houses. Gdansk’s venerable cityscape is effectively supported by several museums of international importance.
Exploring the Gdansk countryside
During the summer months, many visitors come to the city to enjoy the historic ambience and the beautiful surrounding beaches. With a hire car, many excursions can be made in the surrounding area. Interesting places to visit include the mouth of the Vistula River and the associated Vistula Lagoon or the Wolin Peninsula.
Sopot is a particularly beautiful, once elegant seaside resort of the golden twenties of the last century. Worth seeing are the Art Nouveau villas and summer houses of the former Gdansk upper class.
