Exploring MAUI with a hire car

Maui is the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago and is part of the US state of Hawaii.

The island’s capital is Wailuku, and the international airport is also located here.

The tropical island climate is stable, the main rainy season, when tropical winter storms can also occur, is from November to April.

A gorgeous tropical landscape interspersed with sugar cane and pineapple plantations, long beaches and warm seas make Maui a special destination. The best way to explore the island is by hire car.

THINGS TO SEE ON MAUI

In Wailuku the round trip could begin. Here, the Kaaumanu Church awaits you, a white wooden church worth seeing, which was already built in 1837. It’s especially worth attending a service on Sunday, when the congregation performs church hymns in the melodic Hawaiian language.

Hawaiian art, as well as everyday objects, can then be viewed when you visit the Bailey House Museum. It is surrounded by a lovely garden with many tropical plants. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tickets are seven dollars.

Many nations make up Hawaii’s population. At Kepaniwai Country Park & Heritage Gardens, you can get an overview. There you will find a Chinese temple, a Japanese tea house, a Portuguese villa but also a Polynesian grass house. The park is located just four kilometers from Wailuku and can be reached in a few minutes by hire car.

The pretty town of Paia could be your next destination. The small town once made its living from sugar cane farming, but an international windsurfing scene has now established itself here. You can relax on the town’s long beaches and watch the surfers perform their acrobatic feats.

A spectacular coastal drive awaits you as you now steer the hire car along the Hãna Highway to Hãna. You will drive through wild jungle and experience a rugged landscape that offers beautiful views of the sea again and again. There are 54 bridges to cross. You should allow about 2 hours for the drive from Paia to Hãna.

The place Hãna itself captivates by its originality. Due to its secluded location, it is not overrun by tourist crowds. Many native Hawaiians still live here. Exhibits and photos at the Hãna Cultural Center provide information about the town’s past. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

A spectacular nature experience awaits you when you steer your hire car to Haleakala National Park to finish your trip. It is not far from Hãna and can be reached in about half an hour. In the park there is a huge volcano with a height of about 3,000 meters to marvel at. It can also be climbed. The view into the 914 meter deep crater leaves many tourists breathless. Those who are particularly daring also have the opportunity to penetrate the interior of the crater via narrow paths.

FIND A GOOD RESTAURANT

The abundance of tourists ensures that there’s no shortage of good restaurants on Maui. We recommend Mama’s Fish House in Paia, not far from Wailuku. It takes about half an hour by hire car. This stylishly decorated restaurant has been turning freshly caught fish into delicacies using Polynesian recipes since 1973.

FIND A GOOD HOTEL

There’s no shortage of good hotels on Maui, either. You might reserve your room at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. The hotel is located right on a gorgeous golden sand beach. The rooms are stylishly decorated and offer every comfort such as marble bathrooms and minibars. There are several golf courses nearby with a view of the sea. And on the hotel’s terrace you can enjoy excellently mixed cocktails after an eventful day.

And while you empty your drink, you can think about which destinations you’d like to explore by hire car the next day.
