DISCOVERING INDIANAPOLIS WITH A HIRE CAR

The city of Indianapolis is located in the US state of Indiana.

The region is attributed to the Midwest of the United States and it is characterized by its convenient location.

From Indianapolis, many different major cities of the US are within easy reach.

Spectacular motorsport events, numerous museums and a lively nightlife make Indianapolis a diverse destination.

And there’s plenty to discover in the surrounding countryside too, preferably by hire car.

THINGS TO SEE IN INDIANAPOLIS

At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the sightseeing could begin. The track can hold up to 300,000 spectators. This makes it officially the largest sports arena in the US. Every year, the circuit race Indianapolis 500 takes place here, which has been held since May 30, 1911. A spectacular Nascar race is also contested here once a year.

Visit the Hall of Fame Museum and admire the legendary race cars of days gone by. After your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to take a bus around the track, although not at the speed of the race cars. The museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from March to October and from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm from November to February. A ticket costs five dollars. An additional five dollars is charged for the round-trip bus ride.

You can view a wide selection of Native American artifacts when you visit the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Also worth seeing are the nostalgic Western paintings. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Sunday, you can visit the exhibition only after 12:00 pm. A ticket costs ten dollars.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art offers another extensive art exhibit, with more than 54,000 pieces on display of African, American, Asian and European art. The museum is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Thursday and Friday, you can visit the exhibition from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm and on Sunday, the gates open at 12:00 pm. Closing time is at 17:00. Admission is free of charge.

To finish your sightseeing, we recommend visiting one of the city’s landmarks: the 86-metre-high Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built from 1888 to 1901 to commemorate the city’s sons who died in the American Civil War.

FIND A GOOD RESTAURANT

If you’re in the mood for some real American cuisine, you can head to the Mug ‘N’ Bun. This American diner, which has been around for nearly 50 years, makes delicious burgers and hot dogs. The homemade coney sauce, a spicy sauce to go with the hot dog, is considered an insider’s tip. If you like, you can also have the meal served right in your hire car.

DISCOVERING A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL

For many travelers, the Canterbury, whose history dates back to 1858, is the best hotel in town. Steeped in tradition, it boasts a posh lobby, an excellent restaurant and stylishly furnished rooms that offer the comforts of modern times.

A REWARDING DESTINATION IN THE SURROUNDINGS

Cine buffs are sure to be drawn to Fairmount. The 136 kilometres will take you about an hour and a half. Fairmount is where screen legend James Dean was born. Learn details about the star’s life at the Historical Museum and Dean Memorial Gallery. Afterwards, you can still visit the tomb, on which lipstick prints can be found again and again. On the way back to Indianapolis, you will have plenty of opportunity to think about which destinations you would like to head to next with the hire car
