Exploring HONOLULU WITH A HIRE CAR
Honolulu is located on the island of O`ahu and is the capital of the American state of Hawaii.
In the shadow of the mighty crater of the Black Diamond, it is not only one of the largest cities in the Pacific, with a population of around 377,000, but also the hub for air travel in the Pacific region.
The “protected harbor,” which is what Honolulu translates to, is a melting pot of Western, Asian and Polynesian cultures that gives it a fascinating, cosmopolitan feel.
A vibrant city life, gorgeous beaches, numerous museums and beautiful parks make Honolulu a diverse destination.
There are many picturesque places and special destinations to discover in the surrounding area. They can be easily reached by hire car.
THINGS TO SEE IN HONOLULU
The Iolani Palace is a good starting point for sightseeing. The last two kings of Hawaii resided in this building. The foundation stone for the magnificent building was laid in 1879 and construction was completed in 1882. Inside you will find richly decorated rooms. Especially the huge throne room with its stucco decorated ceiling impresses the visitors. The palace can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 16:00. A ticket with audio tour costs just under $15.
After the tour, you have the opportunity to stroll through the beautifully landscaped palace grounds and admire the imposing banyan tree. Under its canopy, you almost feel like you’re in a small house.
You’ll delve deep into Hawaii’s history when you visit the Hawaii State Archives. There you will find a large number of exhibits such as books, documents and photos from the colonial past. Not far from here, a mighty church awaits you, the Kawaiahao Church. It was built between 1836 and 1842 and impresses with its austere facade supported by columns in the front part. You should take a closer look at the stones from which the church was built, as they were laboriously cut from an offshore coral reef.
After visiting the church, you have the option to travel to Asia when you visit Honolulu’s bustling Chinatown. There, you can stroll through exotic markets, shop for traditional Chinese medicine in small stores, or sample delicacies at a restaurant that you may not have encountered before. Finally, you could visit the Hawaii State Art Museum to admire traditional and modern art of the state. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.

FIND A GOOD RESTAURANT
Hololulu is one of the main tourist destinations in Hawaii, and so you’ll find plenty of good restaurants here. The adventurous will head to Chinatown, and point to a dish at one of the cookshops around Maunakea Marketplace for a culinary surprise.
FINDING A GOOD HOTEL
There’s no shortage of good hotels in this city, either. You might book your room at the Moana Surfrider. Here, you’ll reside in Honolulu’s oldest beachfront hotel, with a history dating back more than a century. You will experience a correspondingly nostalgic atmosphere in the lobby. The rooms are extremely comfortably equipped and do not miss any modern comfort.
A REWARDING DESTINATION IN THE ENVIRONMENT
What would Hawaii be without its surfers? The town of Haleiwa is all about the sport. Haleiwa is located just over 50 kilometers from Honolulu. It will take you just under an hour to drive there in your hire car.
In Haleiwa you can visit a surf museum, buy original souvenirs in many shops and then watch the locals jumping into the waves with their boards at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park. And on the way back, you’ll have a little time to also think about which destinations in Hawaii you’d like to head to next in your hire car.
