Discover Simferopol by Hire Car
Simferopol is a city on the Crimean Peninsula, part of Ukraine, on the Black Sea.
It is the capital of the autonomous Republic of Crimea and also the cultural center of the so-called Crimean Tatars, a people originating from the steppes of Central Asia, who have resided on the Crimean peninsula since the early Middle Ages.
The development of Simferopol
Even today, the descendants of the Crimean Tatars make up a considerable proportion of the population.
Already in ancient times, a Greek settlement existed near Simferopol, which was destroyed by Goths after the collapse of the Roman Empire.
In the 14th century, a Crimean Tatar settlement stood there.
This was destroyed after the conquest of Crimea in the late 18th century, and Tsarina Catherine the Great founded the city of Simferopol, dominated by Russian architecture and inhabitants.
Today, the city of just under 350,000 is known far beyond the borders of the former Soviet Union primarily for its puppet theatre. The premises of the theatre regularly host performances of this world-famous attraction.
Exploring the surroundings of Simferopol
Since Simferopol is located pretty much in the center of the Crimean peninsula, it is a good starting point to the other sights of the region.
For example, a long trolley bus line leads to the famous seaside resort of Yalta on the Black Sea.
Furthermore, the famous sight Bakhchysarai (city with Muslim architecture), as well as the city of Sevastopol is located near the city and can be easily reached.
However, if you want to be independent of timetables, it is advisable to hire a car locally. These are available inexpensively for a relatively small flat fee.
