Discover Kharkov by Hire Car
If there were a title for the “smartest city” in Ukraine, Kharkov, with its 42 universities and colleges, would certainly deserve it.
But also with its numerous theatres and museums, Kharkov gives a wonderful insight into Ukrainian visual and performing arts.
So it comes as no surprise that the metropolis of millions is considered an important centre of science and education.
Development of Kharkov
Originally, Kharkov was founded as a fortress to secure the southern borders of the Russian Empire in 1654 between the Kharkov and Lopan rivers.
Earlier, soldiers settled here mainly for protection against the Tatars, and it became the administrative center of the governorate in 1765.
Due to discoveries of ore and coal in the 19th century, Kharkov also became extremely interesting for industry and trade. A sad chapter of the city is especially the period between 1933 and 1945.
First, some 25,000 people starved to death as a result of Stalin’s policies, and then it became the target of numerous attacks by the Germans, with disastrous consequences, because strategically Kharkov, with its war industry, was considered an important point.
Today, however, Ukraine’s second largest city presents an almost majestic image with its imposing buildings and squares.
Sights in Kharkov
So, at eleven hectares, Kharkov has the largest square in Europe, with the Dershprom, the House of State Industry, towering impressively above it.
No less impressive, however, are the Catherine Palace, the main railway station and the sensational neoclassical theatre by the famous Russian architect Konstantin Andreyevich Thon, to name but a few.
To explore Kharkov on your own, a hire car is highly recommended.
