The island of Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand about 35 km from the mainland.

Ferry services run from the island’s capital, Na Thon, to Surat Tani and the neighbouring islands of Pangan and Tao.
The island has a smaller airport. Koh Samui consists mainly of mountainous land with a sparse stand of trees and bushes.
The original jungle has been cleared in favour of large coconut plantations. The climate is tropical, with annual temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity.
The sea is consistently warm, with temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius. There is a ring road around the island, which is about 51 km long.
