Discover Chiang Rai by Hire Car
Chiang Rai is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Thailand, as well as the third largest city in the country and one of the most popular tourist destinations.
The city is located about 700 km from the Thai capital Bangkok, at an altitude of 580 metres and on the banks of the Maenam Kok, a tributary of the Mekong River.
The domestic airport is only about 8 km away from Chiang Rai.
The city’s population of around 136,500 includes many members of the hill tribes of Lisu, Meo, Akha and Karen.
Sights in Chiang Rai
Famous for its beautiful location on the Golden Triangle(The Golden Triangle is the name given to the border area between Thailand, Laos and Maynmar).
For those interested in culture, Chiang Rai is home to the Buddhist temple complex of Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, where around the year 1260 King Mengrai decided to found the city. The statue of the founder, who lived from 1239 – 1317, can be admired here.
Also in Chiang Rai is the site of the Thai national shrine: the Emerald Buddha (66 cm high Buddha statue with throne).
Exploring the surroundings of Chiang Rai
As a base for excursions by hire car, Chiang Rai is ideally suited. North of the city is Chiang Saen, a town founded in the 14th century, where you can visit ancient temple ruins and parts of the city wall.
The ancient temple Wat Phra That Chom Kitte can be reached by climbing 300 steps, from there you can enjoy a magnificent view over the mountains Thailand.
