Chiang Mai is a province in northern Thailand dominated by the Himalayas. It is home to many of the country’s 1000 or so hill tribes.
The provincial capital of the same name has a population of 250,000 and is located in the Maenam Ping river valley, just below the province’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon.
Thailand’s third largest city has modernized its cityscape to conform to Western templates. It is the economic and cultural centre of the north and is known for producing exceptionally beautiful teak or jade carvings and silver jewellery.
Sightseeing in Chiang Mai
There are 200 Buddhist temples in the Chiang Mai urban area, many located right in the old city.
The most important are Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Chiang Mau, which houses a rock crystal Buddha made in the 7th century.
The National Museum exhibits historical findings of the region. A very special experience is a visit to the night bazaar, which opens daily after sunset on the riverbank. Here, members of the hill tribes sell their products.
Chiang Mai province is famous for the beauty of its landscape and is a magnet for tourists.
Exploring the Surroundings of Chiang Mai
With a hire car, you can also visit more distant destinations, such as the waterfalls of Mae Klong and Mae Sa and the cave system of Chiang Do, which is walkable for 10 km and contains numerous Buddha statues.
Near the caves is an elephant camp.
