Discover Jönköping by Hire Car
Located at the southern tip of Lake Vättern, Jönköping is a mix of cosy traditional buildings and early industry.
Spending a few days here and then going on a tour with a hire car, for example around the two large lakes Vännern and Vättern, is a great way to get to know Sweden.
Småland, as the region around Jönköping is called, is not centrally located, but it is central nonetheless. Here is real Sweden, as imagined by Astrid Lindgren: Nature, crafts, lakes, forest and many red summer houses, the “Sommarstugas”.
Recreational opportunities in Jönköping
If you want to follow in the footsteps of old crafts and traditions, Jönköping is the place to be: this is where world-famous matches were made many, many decades ago – the Match Museum is a reminder of this.
The employees of the nearby Husqvarna factory, still a household name today, lived in the blacksmith’s village, which can be visited including a gallery.
At the edge of Lake Vättern, numerous small family businesses line the traditional “polkagrisar”.
Anyone can watch the production of these red and white striped peppermint sweets: With vigorous movements, the tough sugary dough is kneaded until it takes on a silky white hue.
In the adjacent shops, such takeaways are lovingly packaged.
