Sights in Zaragoza
The city had its beginnings around 24 AD, when it was founded by the Romans under the name Colonia Caesaraugusta – from which the name Saragossa is derived.
Saragossa’s landmark is the Basilica de Pilar, considered the largest Baroque building in Spain. In 40 AD, Our Lady is said to have appeared here to St James on a pillar, which is still the most important sanctuary of the place of worship. The basilica was then gradually built around it. Meanwhile, the unique building has eleven domes on a length of 137 metres and is 67 metres wide. The church of Saragossa, in which different architectural styles of various epochs harmoniously unite, shines particularly beautifully in the light of the numerous spotlights at night.
The most important secular building in Zaragoza is the Aljaferia Palace, created by the Moors in the 11th century and long the seat of the kings of Aragon. Today it houses the regional parliament.
