Discover Las Palmas by Hire Car

Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria is a worthwhile destination for tourists.

Here, travellers can stroll through a charming old town, go on a shopping spree in pretty shops and boutiques, or sample Canarian cuisine in delightful restaurants.

And the surrounding countryside is also worthwhile and can be easily discovered by hire car. For rental and travel we have a few tips.

Receiving the hire car

Numerous hire car companies have their stations directly in the terminal. There you can quickly and easily receive the key of your hire car. However, there are also providers whose stations are only located in the vicinity of the airport. In this case, you may have to wait a long time for a shuttle to take you to your rental company. It is better to find out where your rental company is located before renting the car.

Booking the right hire car

Even in the interior of the island, many roads are quite narrow and winding. Better choose a small and manoeuvrable hire car to get through everywhere.

But before booking, think about how much luggage you want to take on the trip. This way, you avoid having another suitcase in front of the hire car even though the trunk is already full.

Hire car prices

Off-season, you can get a hire car in Las Palmas at amazingly cheap rates. However, watch out for hidden costs in the rental terms.

When the peak season then begins in winter and summer, hire car prices also rise, especially for cars booked at short notice. You can usually get the cheapest deals if you book well in advance of your trip and use our convenient price comparison.

Insurance

Even in the mountainous interior of the island, but also in the turbulent Las Palmas, an accident can happen quickly. Protect yourself and book a car with comprehensive insurance without excess. With the third party liability you should pay attention to the sum insured. It should be at least one million euros.

Such a sum is namely quickly reached if people are injured in an accident or several vehicles are involved. If the sum insured of your rental company is too low, you can provide additional protection with a so-called Mallorca policy. Of course, you must take out this insurance before the trip.

age limit

In Las Palmas, there is virtually no rental agency that will hire car to drivers under 21. And drivers under 25 are usually charged an additional fee.

Seniors can also only expect to hire car from some rental companies up to the age of 75. Be sure to check the terms and conditions of your desired rental company before renting.

Tank control

See before booking also, what fuel regulation the lender offers. Often, the hire car is handed over in Las Palmas namely with almost empty tank. You then bring the car back with the same level. In this case, you should be sure to confirm the level of the car in writing when taking over the vehicle.

Other rental companies oblige you to buy the first tank of fuel. In return, you can then return the car with an empty tank. This option is the worst for you, because the price at which the lender fills the tank is usually significantly higher than normal gasoline prices. In addition, you will never manage to roll into the parking lot of the hire car company with the last drop of gasoline, so always pay the remaining gasoline.

Accessories

If you are travelling to Las Palmas with young children, you will definitely need child seats. And if you don’t want to carry them on the plane, you’ll need to rent them from your rental company. Be sure to make reservations well in advance to be sure the items you want are available on the day of rental.

Language barrier

In Las Palmas, you may find that the staff at the hire car station speak poor English. In this case, it can be helpful to write down the phone number of the Spanish head office of your rental company. There you can ask for translation assistance.

Free kilometers

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands. If you only want to see a part of the island, you will cover a lot of kilometres in a hire car. Book a car with free kilometres so that you don’t have to keep an eye on the mileage indicator during your excursions.

Bail

If you book with a rental company that actually charges the deposit to your credit card and then transfers it back after you return the vehicle, it can sometimes take a long time to get the money back in your account. Rather book with a rental company that just blocks the amount.

Customer Review Hire Car

Most of the customers are satisfied with the hire car in Las Palmas. However, some complain that the outside of the car was in an unkempt condition. Always examine your vehicle closely for scratches and dents when you pick it up and have the defects confirmed in writing. This is the only way to avoid being held responsible for damage caused by one of the previous tenants when you return the car.

Safety rental vehicles

Most rental vehicles in Las Palmas are safe. However, you should still do a brake test before your first drive in the hire car company’s parking lot. And check your vehicle’s lights, too.

Sights in Las Palmas

Theatre Galdós: Experience the Belle Époque
Begin your stroll in the old town. It was founded back in 1478 and was the first colonial city in Spain. First, visit the Galdós Theatre. Here you will feel transported back to the time of the Belle Époque. Three guided tours are offered between 10:15 and 12:15. Tickets for the tours can be purchased at the theatre’s ticket office and cost five euros per person. Unfortunately, tours are not available on Sundays.

Calle Triana: Shopping Paradise
Continue the tour to Calle Triana. Here you can shop to your heart’s content. The pedestrian zone is about a kilometre long and is lined with small shops, boutiques and cafés. Also take time to admire the magnificent facades of the houses. Now you should take a look at the Gabinete Literario. It is considered the most beautiful building in the city and also takes you back to the Belle Époque period. The house was built in 1844 by British businessmen as a literary meeting place.

Cathedral: mighty nave
Your tour could end with a visit to the cathedral. The construction was already started in 1497. But it took until the 19th century until the work was completed. Especially the mighty nave will fascinate you. But now it is time to experience today’s Las Palmas. Stroll through the streets, sit down in a café where you do not expect tourists and observe the life of the locals. You’ll quickly get a feel for the rhythm of this fascinating city.

Find a good hotel in Las Palmas

There are many hotels in Las Palmas, including some gems. We recommend the Hotel Santa Catalina. It was built in 1890 and offers the glamour of days gone by. Still, visitors don’t have to sacrifice any amenities.

Find a good restaurant

You’ll find genuine Canarian cuisine at the Casa Montesdeoca restaurant. You’ll dine in a 16th-century house and enjoy excellent dishes made from the best regional ingredients.

Sights in the surrounding area

Teror: tranquil pilgrimage town
Just a little over half an hour’s drive separates Las Palmas from Teror. Despite the short distance, you’ll end up in a different world here. If it is hectic and almost South American in Las Palmas, you will find the rather contemplative life in Teror. In 1481, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here, and since then Teror has been the island’s place of pilgrimage. Consequently, you should first visit the basilica.

Here you will find an effigy of the statue of the Virgin Mary, which remained intact when much of the church fell victim to an explosion in 1718. Another miracle commemorated by the faithful with hundreds of candles. Afterwards, take a stroll through the picturesque old town with its cobblestone streets. The Pilgrims’ Museum, housed in a 300-year-old building, is also worth a visit.

Vega de San Mateo: Show Mill
Continue your journey to Vega de San Mateo. Again, expect only a half-hour drive. In Vega de San Mateo, you can watch grain being turned into flour at the Gofio Mill. It’s worth strolling around the old town a bit more, sitting down in one of the cosy cafés and planning which destinations you’d like to see over the next few days. If you’re in town on Saturday or Sunday morning, don’t miss the colourful farmers’ market.

conclusion

With the hire car it is possible to travel excellently from Las Palmas. Almost all places of Gran Canaria can be reached quickly and easily. And with our price comparison you will also always find a cheap hire car for your holiday pleasure.
