Discover Almada by Hire Car
Almada is a city of just over 100,000 inhabitants in central Portugal, at the mouth of the Tagus River on the Atlantic Ocean.
The first settlement on the site of the present city dates from the time when the Arabs ruled most of the Iberian Peninsula, hence Portugal. At that time, this place was mentioned as Al-Madan.
Historical about Almada
When the Christians reconquered the area the city was renamed Almada. At the time of the Portuguese Voyages of Discovery and the subsequent expansionist policies of the Portuguese kings in South America, Africa and Asia in the 15th and 16th centuries, Almada was developed into a fortified base with a small fortress.
The central location in the mouth of the Tagus played a decisive role, as this was the prerequisite for Almada to protect the flourishing maritime trade metropolis of Lisbon with its fortress as an outpost from any approaching enemies.
