Discover Trondheim by Hire Car
Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway, with a population of just over 160,000 in an area of almost 350 square kilometres.
It is picturesquely situated at the mouth of the Nidelv River, in the west of the country.
From the sea separates Trondheim about 70 kilometers.
Founded in 997 by the famous Viking king Olav I Tryggvason, Trondheim was then also the seat of kings and capital of Norway for a long time.
Sights in Trondheim
In terms of cultural history, Trondheim’s Old Town is home to two of the country’s most important sights.
One is the Gothic Nirados Cathedral, where the imperial insignia is still located and which has been reconstructed in the last 100 years after a fire, and the adjacent Palace of the Archbishop.
The imposing cathedral is still where Norwegian royalty are crowned and represents the spiritual centre of Norway. Recreation and relaxation are sought by many Trondheim residents, especially in summer, on the enchanting island of Munkholmen, which lies in the fjord off the city’s harbour entrance.
The listed island, with its turbulent history, is now home to a medieval fortress complex originally built as a monastery. During the summer months, a ferry runs every 30 minutes from Ravnkloa in the city’s harbour between Trondheim and Munkholmen.
Free time activities in Trondheim
You can get a fantastic view of Trondheim from the town’s 124-metre-high television tower. Completed in 1985, the structure has a rotating observation deck that allows for a sensational 360-degree panoramic view.
Also worth seeing are the old warehouses by the river and the old wooden bridge Gamle bybro.
With a hire car, the fortress Kristiansten above the old town of Trondheim or the nearby lake can also be reached.
