Discover Hammerfest by Hire Car
Hammerfest is one of the smaller towns in Norway, with a population of just 10,000.
Located quite far north, near the Arctic Circle, the town is set in a unique island world.
It’s worth paying Hammerfest a visit, especially during the short but beautiful summer months, including the days around Midsummer’s Eve.
Development of Hammerfest
In the past centuries, Hammerfest was an important port for supplying the entire region with essential foodstuffs, as the road network was not yet very well developed. Today, Hammerfest lends itself to extensive tours with a hire car in the region of the same name.
The many water areas and the seemingly endless forests, provide an excellent habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna. Due to the relatively long dark periods in the winter months of up to 20 hours, the summer is primarily a good time for a holiday in Hammerfest.
During the period from mid-June to mid-July, the sun does not set at all and it is still daylight even, in the middle of the night.
Recreational opportunities in Hammerfest
Tourist highlights in Hammerfest include: a museum about whaling and the development of the Arctic Ocean, an old church which is the only important building to have survived the Second World War unscathed, and the Meridian Stone, erected in the 19th century to determine geographical longitudes.
Don’t miss a boat trip, it’s a great way to navigate secluded fjords, or visit one of the countless small islands, most of which are uninhabited.
Friends of fishing will find in the waters off Hammerfest, optimal conditions and can hope for a big catch.
